beautiful view of the Nam Ou River
After an hour of waiting and being confused by Laos' public transportation, three hours of hot and bumpy ride, we made it to Nong Khiaw (Northern Laos). This quiet little town with the Nam Ou river at the middle, is a good and wonderful break from the touristy North Thailand and Luang Prabang. The kind of place and travel I like, and love even.
As you cross the bridge, you can see the bungalows lining up the other side of the river.
Quaint bungalows with their own balcony and hammock! We chose to stay at Sunrise Bungalows, it's a bit pricey than the cheaper ones. But for USD9 or 80,000 LAK, with your own hammock, an orange tree within your reach, and a wonderful view, it's more than worth it.

It forces you in a good way to not think about anything stressful. And with all the worries I've been having lately about finally going back to 'reality', this is what I really needed. Simple life at its best.

Even just staying in the balcony, reading a book, enjoying a delicious fruit yoghurt shake, is more than enough to stay here more than what you initially planned.

How to get to Nong Khiaw from Luang Prabang:
Various travel agencies offer bus/van services from LP to Nong Khiaw. Most leave in the morning. Fares range between 160,000 LAK to 180,000 LAK. Travel time is around 2 to 3 hours.
Food and Accommodations in Nong Khiaw:
From Nong Khiaw's bus terminal, you can either walk to the different accomodations. There are many cheap guesthouses on a dirt road near the boat terminal. Or you can cross the bridge to those with bungalows with a great view of the river. Most food places are also on the area after the bridge. I highly recommend ordering any dish with coconut milk sauce, really really good. ;)
